Perhaps this war came too close to the War of Independence many men fought in both struggles. Why American posterity gives little more than scant appreciation to the historic importance of the War of 1812 is not understood. He retired in Erie, where he has been president of the Erie County Historical Society. Knoll, USN (Ret.), for permitting us to share with our members his account of the great difficulties involved in building Perry's 'Fleet in the Wilderness' and the great battle that fleet won.
The Naval Historical Foundation is therefore grateful to Rear Admiral Denys W. More pages in history are devoted to the story of the Battle of Lake Erie than to the building of the ships that fought that battle.
